Grupo Piñero recycles more than 10,000 tons of waste in the last five years

  • Since 2016, the company has been working on the implementation of a Recyclable Waste Management System, as part of the circularity approach of its environmental strategy.
  • This year, it is developing its Circular Economy Strategic Plan, focused on optimizing resource management and ensuring zero landfill.
  • On the occasion of Global Recycling Day, Grupo Piñero organizes different initiatives to raise awareness, aimed at both its professionals and its clients, about the importance of this action as an environmental tool.

Palma de Mallorca, May 12, 2022 - Grupo Piñero, a Spanish tourism company with almost 50 years of history, aims to adapt its management to climate risks, creating a clean and circular business model that optimally manages resources. To this end, it has defined three lines of work in its environmental strategy: energy and climate, natural capital and circularity.

In order to consolidate a circular production model that achieves a 50% reduction in waste by 2030 and guarantees zero landfill by 2050, since 2016 the company has been working on the implementation of a Recyclable Waste Management System. Thanks to this program, Grupo Piñero has managed to recover more than 10,000 tons of recyclable waste in five years. A figure that also means a reduction of around one third of the amount of waste that ends up in a landfill.

According to Isabel Piñero, Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) of Grupo Piñero, “these results demonstrate that at Grupo Piñero we continue to be faithful to our firm commitment to protect and preserve our planet through recycling.” To which she adds, “in 2016 we implemented our Selective Management System and this, far from slowing down during the pandemic, has continued its course and evolved with our activity.”

In parallel, and in order to achieve the targets defined for 2030 and 2050, Grupo Piñero has started to work on the development of its Circular Economy Strategic Plan. Precisely in this area, the Hotel Bahia Principe San Felipe has recently joined a circular economy pilot project promoted by the employers' association ASHOTEL, the Tenerife Island Council, the ASAJA farmers' cooperative and several Canary Island municipalities, including Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz.

The company is also collaborating with the local community in a waste management project in Samaná through the Samaná Biodiverso, Limpio y Sostenible ("Biodiverse, Clean and Sustainable Samaná") project, which is being developed together with the German cooperation agency GIZ and in which local schools and government bodies are participating.

Isabel Piñero, the Group’s CSO, adds: “We have recently participated with the German agency GIZ and Viva Wyndha, through German cooperation, in a tour of good practices of waste management projects in Costa Rica, in order to publicize our Biodiverse, Clean and Sustainable Samaná project and the work being done in the Dominican Republic regarding awareness and waste management.

In addition, the company is working to implement different projects in the coming years, including the creation of a circular economy department, composting plants in all our hotels and resorts, and in our Cayo Levantado Resort project, a biodigestion plant for organic waste and another for sorting recyclable waste.

Promoting environmental awareness among society

For Global Recycling Day, which is celebrated every year on May 17, Grupo Piñero is going to develop different activities with the aim of raising awareness in society about the importance of this simple gesture as an environmental tool.

Specifically, at its Palma de Mallorca headquarters, the company will hold an action aimed at recycling books. The initiative, called "Share Your Passion for Reading", promoted by CaixaBank in its volunteer platform, with which Grupo Piñero collaborates, encourages its professionals to choose a book that has marked their childhood or youth, and that they still have, in order to give it a second life, gifting it to a minor, a beneficiary of the Red Cross Youth programs.

The hotels and resorts managed by the company under the Bahia Principe brand will also be carrying out different initiatives for clients and employees. Specifically in their Mexico complex, they will host the Escul-Trash traveling exhibition for a few days.  The exhibit displays sculptures made with waste collected from the beaches of Quintana Roo, with the purpose of promoting the preservation of the Mexican Caribbean coasts and raising awareness of the risks associated with their contamination.

Furthermore, through the "We are Ecocentric”, movement, an initiative promoted by the company to invite society as a whole to work together in favor of the planet, the focus is on recycling as an essential point of its 10 principles for being a good Ecocentric.
