Grupo Piñero and Huawei sign a collaboration agreement to implement GPON and WiFi technology in some of its hotels in the Dominican Republic

  • The companies signed the agreement at the 2023 Mobile World Congress.

  • The collaboration with Huawei will lead to a technological improvement in the hotels and in the experience of their guests.

Barcelona, February 28, 2023.- Grupo Piñero, a Spanish multinational company that has been operating in the tourism sector for almost 50 years, and Huawei, the world's leading provider of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices, have signed an agreement formalizing their collaboration to implement GPON and WiFi technology in the following Grupo Piñero hotels in the Dominican Republic: Cayo Levantado Resort and the Bahia Principe Grand Bavaro, Bahia Principe Luxury Samana, Bahia Principe Grand Turquesa and Bahia Principe Grand Aquamarine Hotels.

The agreement was signed at the Huawei stand at the 2023 Mobile World Congress by Mateo Ramón, Chief Information Officer of Grupo Piñero, and Jack Heliang, general manager of Huawei Enterprise Business Spain, and the signing was attended by Ma Haixu, president of ICT Strategy & Marketing at Huawei.

Thanks to the agreement with Huawei, Grupo Piñero will have a WiFi network and GPON technology in a selection of its resorts in the Dominican Republic, ensuring the best possible connectivity for all its guests. The breakthrough provided by Huawei to Grupo Piñero's resorts is the implementation of GPON (Gigabit-Capable Passive Optical Network) technology. GPON is a telecommunications access technology that uses fiber optic cabling to reach the end user. This technology creates converged IP-based broadband networks, maximizing assets and enabling more services to be offered over the same infrastructure. Its main advantages are longer cable distance, better quality of service and increased security in the user's navigation.

In the words of Grupo Piñero CIO Mateo Ramón: "This agreement will allow us to incorporate the necessary infrastructure to deploy the solutions that will improve the customer experience, indispensable for the path to digital transformation that is underway."

"At Huawei, we are very proud to be able to collaborate in this project that shows once again how technology is an essential part of determining the competitiveness of the hospitality industry," explained Jack Heliang. “We are staunch advocates that agreements such as the one that brings us together here today are the best formula for success and the key to driving the future of the sector," he concluded.

Grupo Piñero is committed to innovation for the constant improvement of the business through the implementation of pioneering global projects and promoting digitalization aligned with the business strategy. One of the main lines of action in its digitalization strategy is the improvement of the customer experience, as evidenced by the signing of this agreement with Huawei, which represents real progress in the connectivity of most of its hotels in the Dominican Republic.
