Tulum, Quintana Roo, July 21, 2021.- A press conference was held yesterday around 4:30 p.m. at the Tulum Country Club, home of the PGA Riviera Maya golf course, which will be the perfect setting for the Bupa Championship Golf Tournament presented by Volvo. The event will define, among others, the winner of the Player of the Year title and the Top 5 in Points who will advance to the Kom Ferry Tour in 2022.

It was presented by the master of ceremonies Gregory Villalobos, PGA TOUR Latinoamerica press officer, who gave the floor to Fernando Padron, General Director of the PGA Riviera Maya Golf Club, who in turn welcomed all those present at the conference. In attendance were Todd Rhinehart, Executive Director PGA Tour Latinoamerica, Fernando Lledo, Director of Bupa Mexico, Fernando Castillo, Director of Development and Innovation at Bahia Principe, and Alvaro Ortiz, a Mexican golfer who is currently ranked 4th in the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

Fernando Padrón, Director of Golf at PGA Riviera Maya, commented, "As part of Grupo Piñero, an international tourism company with more than 40 years of experience, our purpose is to create exciting experiences. Specifically, at Bahia Principe Golf, as part of the group's Living Resorts Division, our goal is to become a benchmark in the design, construction and management of golf courses in natural settings that respect the environment, and to provide unique experiences for all types of players to enjoy this sport in truly privileged settings.

It is an honor for us to host the final of the PGA Tour Latinoamerica, a championship that began in Mexico and will also end in this country, in such an incredible destination as Tulum.

Tulum Country Club (our residential development in this destination) and PGA Riviera Maya are transforming the lifestyle in the area, always with a firm commitment to provide greater exposure and dissemination of golf. And what better way to do this than by hosting the Bupa Championship presented by Volvo.

After signing a strategic alliance with the PGA of America for the next 10 years, we continue to organize top level international tournaments, without a doubt a fantastic showcase throughout Latin America, the United States and the rest of the world.”

Todd Rhinehart, executive director PGA Tour Latinoamerica, officially opened the Bupa Championship presented by Volvo, the final tournament of the 2020-21 PGA TOUR Latinoamerica season, with a prize purse of US$175,000, champion's share US$31,500, best cut 55 and ties.

The closing tournament of the 2020-21 campaign will feature a field of 132 players from 24 countries, including 15 Mexicans. Most of the competitors, 119 players, secured their place in the field by their position on the Tour points list. Ten others entered through the open qualifier played last Wednesday in Weston, Florida, while four others were awarded invitations.

The field is led by American Brandon Matthews, who holds first place in the Tour with a 167-point lead. Matthews, the only player to win two tournaments this season, is joined in the field by the other five champions of the season: Conner Godsey, Sam Stevens, Álvaro Ortiz, MJ Maguire and Alex Rocha.

Todd Rhinehart thanked Bahia Principe for their hospitality and commented that this week the players have been talking a lot about the course and its spectacular facilities, the general consensus being that it is sure to be a great test of golf this week in a very auspicious setting to crown the PGA Latinoamerica Player of the Year.

The Mexican player Alvaro Ortiz added, "We are very grateful to all the organizers for making possible our dream of playing this tournament; we know it is a very difficult course and it will be a great challenge for all the players and our expectations are, of course, to enjoy ourselves and raise the cup."

To conclude the event, the guests were treated to a magnificent cocktail party on the terrace of the Tulum Country Club clubhouse.
