Grupo Piñero has recycled more than 26,000 tons of waste in the last seven years

  • Since 2016, the company has been working on the implementation of a Recyclable Waste Management System, as part of the circularity approach of its environmental strategy.
  • In line with the goals set for 2030 and 2050, the company continues to make progress with its Circular Economy Strategic Plan, focused on optimizing resource management and ensuring zero landfill.
  • On the occasion of Global Recycling Day, Grupo Piñero organized different initiatives to raise awareness, aimed at both its professionals and its clients, about the importance of this action as an environmental tool.

Palma, May 17, 2024.- Grupo Piñero aims to adapt its management to climate risks, creating a clean and circular business model that optimally manages resources and achieves a 70% reduction in waste sent to landfill by 2030, guaranteeing zero landfill by 2050.

Since 2016, the company has been working on the implementation of a Recyclable Waste Management System. Thus, thanks to this program, Grupo Piñero has managed to recover more than 26,000 tons of recyclable waste in seven years. This represents a reduction of around one third of the amount of waste that ends up in a landfill.

According to Isabel Piñero, Chief Sustainability Officer of Grupo Piñero, “these results demonstrate that at Grupo Piñero we continue to be faithful to our firm commitment to protect and preserve our planet through recycling.” She added, “By incorporating innovative and environmentally responsible methods, we hope to continue to promote a circular business model in all of our destinations.

Promoting Responsible Waste Management

In order to achieve the goals set for 2030 and 2050, Grupo Piñero also continues to make progress in its Circular Economy Strategic Plan with initiatives such as its pilot composting plant project in the Dominican Republic, specifically at the Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo hotel.

The company is collaborating with local communities to promote recycling, including a waste management project in Samaná through the Samaná Biodiverso, Limpio y Sostenible ("Biodiverse, Clean and Sustainable Samaná") project, which is being developed together with the German cooperation agency GIZ and in which local schools and government bodies are participating.

Innovation as an Ally in the Circular Transition

In addition, the company has incorporated an innovative biomicrodigester at Cayo Levantado Resort to manage all organic waste generated on the island.  A small anaerobic digestion plant has been installed based on the SmallBiogas technology developed by the Spanish company Genia Bioenergy, specialized in waste to energy circular economy processes. Thanks to this system, the waste generated in the kitchens, treatment plants and pruning of green spaces is converted into renewable energy and fertilizers, reducing the resort's carbon footprint and initiating a circular economy cycle.

Also at Bahia Principe Sunlight Costa Adeje in Tenerife, and with the help of WINNOW, a project is being carried out in partnership with Easyjet Holidays that uses Artificial Intelligence to optimize the buffet, achieving a significant reduction in food waste. Thanks to advanced data analysis algorithms, this initiative helps to forecast demand and adjust production, avoiding unnecessary surpluses and maximizing resource utilization.

Promoting Environmental Awareness

For Global Recycling Day, which is celebrated every year on May 17, Grupo Piñero has organized different activities through its Eco-Bahia Foundation with the aim of raising awareness among its employees and clients about the importance of this simple gesture as an environmental tool.

Specifically, in Tenerife, Grupo Piñero has organized an Eco-Art contest with recycled materials for the children of the teams and a training session on the correct separation and reclamation of waste imparted by the Environment Department. The Group will offer its clients arts & crafts and recreational activities for children, providing them with an opportunity to learn about good environmental practices in a fun environment.

In Mexico, the Group will conduct a digital survey to raise environmental awareness among its employees as part of its "We Are Ecocentric" Movement, and it has also organized recreational recycling activities for its clients.

In the Dominican Republic, recycling days will be held on the beaches, with contests and art exhibitions using recyclable materials, cardboard handicraft classes, eco-tours and educational talks on the importance of this practice and its impact on environmental protection. In addition, the Group signed a collaboration agreement with the Ramón Santana municipal council, whereby the Group will make a contribution that will enable it to add one day of waste collection service each week to the community.

Finally, in Jamaica, the Group will hold an in-house recycling contest with its staff and will donate a "green dot" recycling station to the Hoolebury Primary School as a means of encouraging recycling in the local community.
