Grupo Piñero Promotes ‘Biodiverse, Clean and Sustainable Samaná’

  • The initiative stems from a public-private partnership that seeks to promote Samaná as a biodiverse, clean and sustainable destination through environmental education and restoration activities and pilot waste management projects.

Grupo Piñero, a Spanish tourism company with more than 40 years of history, is promoting 'Biodiverse, Clean and Sustainable Samaná', a project aimed at positioning this region of the Dominican Republic as an ecological destination through environmental education, restoration and waste management pilot projects.

This project is part of its Integral Coastal Management Plan (PGIL) launched by the company in 2019, which aims to plan and sustainably manage the territory and natural resources of the destinations where it is present.

This initiative, backed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Grupo Piñero and German Development Cooperation (GIZ), has initiated the first work sessions aimed at raising awareness of the biodiversity of the environment and positioning the region as an ecological destination.

The working group conducted a tour of best practices in waste management in the Dominican Republic, in which they visited the municipalities of Sabana Yegua, Las Placetas and Santiago, to learn first-hand about different initiatives to identify success stories for the implementation of pilot waste management projects in Samaná province.

A planning workshop was also held for the 'Biodiverse, Clean and Sustainable Samaná' alliance to be implemented in the coming months, with the participation of different stakeholders such as the Viva Wyndham company, CEBSE, the Caribe Circular project and the Biodiversity and Business program, the latter from GIZ.

In the words of Isabel Piñero, CSO (Chief Sustainability Officer) of Grupo Piñero: “We are very pleased to start the first working days of the 'Biodiverse, Clean and Sustainable Samaná' project. This initiative is a clear reflection of the company's commitment to preserve biodiversity in all the destinations where we operate, by getting the local population involved and establishing strategic alliances with other stakeholders.”

This public-private partnership seeks to raise awareness among key stakeholders in the region of the benefits provided by biodiversity, thus promoting its preservation. The next phases of the project will include actions to promote environmental education in several schools in the area, to foster the conservation and recovery of natural resources in the province of Samaná, and to address one of the main environmental needs: waste management in the region.

This initiative is part of Grupo Piñero's "We Are Ecocentric" movement, with which the Group is promoting its environmental strategy and through which it wants to invite everyone to bring out the "Ecocentric" in them and participate in taking care of our planet.

Grupo Piñero is present in Samaná through its Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts division. The company has four establishments in the region: Hotel Luxury Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado, Luxury Bahia Principe Samaná, Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo and Grand Bahia Principe Cayacoa.
